Live TV Broadcasts over the University Network

This new service, known as TV over IP (or TVoIP), is being piloted in the Faculty of Humanities, primarily for language learners. A number of channels in various languages are available from September 2009. The channels are available across the campus network, but the software for viewing them may not be available on every machine.

To view the channels:

• Use a Faculty of Humanities PC Cluster (see cluster information for locations)
• Use a Humanities machine running the Staff Desktop, Student Desktop or Clip image, these can be identified by the login screen.

From a Staff Desktop / Student Desktop / Cluster machine:

• The VLC media player can be found in the Programs menu:

Choose Start > Programs > Language Centre > Utilities > VLC Media Player

Anyone logging in to any of the above can access VLC Media Player

From a Clip Machine

Choose Start > Programs - Faculty > Faculty of Humanities > Linguistic Resources > VLC Media Player

Please Note: At present only LLC and ELTC staff have been granted access via a Clip based machine. Other Faculty staff can request access via the IT Service desk

the available channels are already set up for you in the ‘Playlist’, which can be found in the ‘View’ menu or via the shortcut Ctrl-L

•Should you want to install the VLC media player to view the channels on your personal machine (e.g. via a laptop connected to the campus network directly), click here. (Please DO Not use these instructions if you are using any Humanities managed desktop (cluster machine, Staff/Student Desktop or a CLIP machine). Please also note that the TVoIP service is not available via a VPN connection.

• If you have any problems, please contact the IT Service Desk though please note we cannot offer assistance for personal (non-University owned) machines.
